Among the state’s many cultural destinations, Kataka (Cuttack) holds a special place. Popularly known as the city of 52 bazaars and 53 lanes, it has a long-standing tradition of celebrating festivals throughout the year. From Pala, Daskathia, and Ram Leela to Asta Prahari, Dola Purnima, Kumar Purnima, Khudurukuni, Saraswati Puja, Ganesh Puja, and the famous Bali Yatra, the city reflects the enduring cultural spirit of Odisha.
Durga Puja is one of the most eagerly awaited celebrations in Kataka (Cuttack). The worship of Goddess Durga takes place during Basanti Durga Puja in spring and the widely celebrated autumn Durga Puja, which usually falls in September or October, depending on the Hindu lunar calendar. The autumn festivities transform the city into a vibrant centre of devotion, artistic expression, and community celebration.
Often compared with the grand Durga Puja celebrations of Kolkata, Kataka (Cuttack) has developed a distinctive identity through its traditional craftsmanship and elaborate silver decorations. One of the biggest attractions is the Chandi Medha, an exquisitely designed silver backdrop or tableau that adorns the idol of Goddess Durga. Crafted with remarkable skill and attention to detail, these silver installations reflect the artistic legacy and devotional spirit of the city.
The Chandi Medhas are admired for their intricate patterns, elaborate ornamentation, and impressive craftsmanship. Along with beautifully decorated idols, illuminated streets, creative pandals, and lively cultural programmes, they contribute to the extraordinary atmosphere of Kataka’s Durga Puja. Each Puja committee strives to present a distinctive artistic vision while preserving the traditions passed down through generations.
For visitors and devotees, Durga Puja in Kataka (Cuttack) is more than a religious occasion. It is an opportunity to experience Odisha’s living heritage, the warmth of its people, and the creative talent of its artisans.
