Google to introduce Odia language in Search’s Discover feature
Google introduced support for seven new languages in Google Search’s Discover feature. Google will introduce three new local languages later this year to Search.
Google had hosted the fifth edition of its annual Google for India event in New Delhi in September. In the event, Google India had announced major changes to Google Search in India. The major changes include the most important from them is being the introduction of support for new local languages to the Discover feature of the Search app in India.
In the year 2016, Google had introduced a Hindi tab on the mobile-based platform to enable users to look for information and discover content in Hindi. The company says that since the launch, Hindi queries in India have increased by a factor of 10 in the country. Now google will introduce support for seven local languages in the Discover tab of the Search app in India.
“Besides Hindi and English, we are today adding seven additional Indian languages in Discover(Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam), with three more coming shortly (Odia, Urdu, Punjabi),” Google wrote in a press release.
As of now, google search supports nine Indian languages. Google said that it would introduce support for three new local languages to Search by the end of the year.
Not only that, but Google also introduced a refreshed design for Google Search in India that will highlight queries in local languages. Users can look for content in local languages by tapping on the chip that appears below the search bar.
Very soon, the Odia users can get search results in their Odia languages based on the context of the information. For instance, if you like to see food recipes in Odia and news in English, then Google Search will automatically show you the relevant content in the respective languages. Google says that these language results will get better in time.
We would also like to mention that Google not only introduced support for new languages in Search but also in its BOLO app that was launched in India earlier this year. To give you some context, Google’s BOLO app is a speech-based reading app that is aimed at helping kids read and improve their comprehension skills. At the time of launch, the app was available for content in Hindi and English. The app will also support content in Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
Also, Google introduced support for additional languages in Google Lens. Google Lens will also support Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi.
