Bhitarkanika National Park to Close for Visitors from January 14 to 22 for Crocodile Census

Bhitarkanika National Park, one of India’s premier biodiversity hotspots, will remain closed to visitors from January 14 to 22, 2025. This temporary closure is essential to facilitate the annual saltwater crocodile census, a critical effort to monitor and conserve this endangered species.

Why the Park Closure?

According to Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Manas Das, the census period aligns with the ideal conditions for accurate crocodile enumeration. Factors such as peak winter, lunar cycles, and the exposure of over 50% of mud banks during this time enhance the visibility of the reptiles in their natural habitat.

Who Conducts the Census?

A 22-team task force will undertake the extensive operation, consisting of:

  • Forest Officials
  • Wildlife Researchers
  • Trained Local Volunteers

More than 100 individuals will receive specialized training on crocodile counting methods. This rigorous preparation ensures accuracy and minimizes disruption to the crocodiles’ environment.

Innovative Techniques for Crocodile Counting

The census involves advanced methodologies to ensure precision:

  1. Day and Night Surveys: Teams will cover rivers, creeks, water inlets, and nullahs across Bhitarkanika’s vast ecosystem.
  2. Spotlights for Night Surveys: This technique is particularly effective for spotting hatchlings and juveniles.
  3. Use of GPS: Geotagging ensures precise mapping of crocodile locations.
  4. Thermometers: Used to measure water temperature, which is a key parameter in crocodile behavior studies.

Crocodile expert Sudhakar Kar, who has extensive experience in crocodilian research, will guide the census process.

Special Measures During the Census

To minimize human impact during the census, the Forest Department will:

  • Deploy soundless boats to prevent disturbing the crocodiles.
  • Enforce a strict ban on visitor entry to eliminate noise pollution and ensure a conducive environment for the survey.

Key Facts: Bhitarkanika’s Crocodile Population

Bhitarkanika is home to a thriving population of saltwater crocodiles, a species listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The last census conducted in January 2024 recorded 1,811 crocodiles in the park.

Why This Matters?

The annual crocodile census plays a crucial role in assessing the health of Bhitarkanika’s ecosystem and shaping conservation policies. By closing the park temporarily, authorities ensure the accuracy of this critical exercise while prioritizing the welfare of the crocodiles.

Planning a Visit to Bhitarkanika?

If you’re planning a trip to Bhitarkanika, make sure to avoid the census period (January 14 to 22). The park will reopen to visitors on January 23, 2025, offering a chance to explore its stunning mangroves, vibrant birdlife, and other wildlife treasures.

Stay tuned for updates on the crocodile census results, which will provide insights into the success of ongoing conservation efforts in one of India’s most unique ecosystems.
