Nilamadhaba Temple Kantilo Prominent Position in Jagannath Culture: Lord Nilamadhaba Temple, Kantilo, is a very old & famous Vishnu temple on the banks of Mahanadi river. It is int he foothills of the twin hills & in the midst of a forest. The waters of the river are considered holy because of their proximity of Lord Nilamadhava & Lord Siddheswar who is also in the same vicinity. Lord Nilamadhava is the main deity for the followers of Lord Jagannath. The shrine of Lord Nilamadhava is on the right side of the Lakshmi temple in Puri Jagannath Temple. It stands on the right bank of Mahanadi. It is called Triveni sangam of Odisha.
Mythology says that, after the tragic death of lord Krishna, his spirit (or Bramha) took a shape of a small stone. Viswavasu found this stone and felt its divinity. So he started worshiping it and name it Lord Nila Madhava. This Brahma was later fetched by King Indradyumna by Brahmin Vidyapati for the creation of Lord Jagannath’s idol. It has been kept inside a small chamber inside the Lords idol. It is believed that it is still present inside the Lord’s idol and is transferred to the new idol after every Nabakalebara.
Maagha Saptami Festival is the best festival observe here. On the Month of Srabana Bol Bom Siva devotees taking water from Mahanadi. Kantilo is famous for Brass and bell metal utensils.

You will reach here by bus and car from Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Angul, Nayagarh. From Bhubaneswar to Kontilo 85 Km and Nayagarh 33 km.
