King Ruled in Puri – Gajapati Maharaja of Puri
The Gajapati (The King of Puri) is treated as the first and foremost Servitor of Lord Jagannath Temple at Puri. During Rath Yatra Festival he sweeps the three Rath with a golden broomstick, the ritual is known as Chera Pahara. In addition to this, he has to perform a number of rituals/duties on different occasions. He is also the chairman of the managing committee of the temple that was constituted by the Government under the Shri Jagannath Temple Act of 1955.
