Car Festival Puri LIVE : Every year, with the arrival of the monsoon, Lord Jagannath embarks on his sacred annual journey, accompanied by his elder brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra. Riding on magnificent, handcrafted wooden chariots, the divine siblings travel from the revered Jagannath Temple in Puri to the Gundicha Temple, affectionately regarded as their garden retreat.

This centuries-old tradition has evolved into one of India’s largest and most celebrated religious festivals—the Rath Yatra, also known as the Puri Car Festival or Chariot Festival. The immense, unstoppable chariots of Lord Jagannath inspired the English word “Juggernaut,” symbolizing an overwhelming and irresistible force.

Historical Origin of Rath Yatra

The origins of the Rath Yatra are rooted in ancient Indian tradition, though some historians suggest that the practice of carrying sacred idols on elaborately decorated chariots may have been influenced by earlier Buddhist customs. The Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Fa-Hien (Faxian), who traveled across India during the 5th century CE, recorded witnessing grand processions in which the image of the Buddha was placed on a magnificent chariot and ceremonially drawn through public streets. This historical account has often been cited as a possible precursor to the chariot festival tradition that later became associated with Lord Jagannath.

Celebration of the Festival

Rath Yatra is celebrated with immense devotion, grandeur, and public participation. The festivities commence in the morning with the Ratha Pratishtha, a sacred ritual performed to consecrate the chariots before the deities begin their journey. However, the most anticipated moment arrives later in the day when thousands of devotees gather to witness and participate in the Ratha Tana, the ceremonial pulling of the chariots.

The three sibling deities—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra—embark on their annual journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in Puri. Each deity travels in a uniquely designed wooden chariot, constructed according to centuries-old religious traditions:

• Nandighosa – The majestic chariot of Lord Jagannath, featuring 18 wheels and standing approximately 23 cubits tall.
• Taladhwaja – The chariot of Lord Balabhadra, distinguished by 16 wheels and a height of around 22 cubits.
• Darpadalana (Devadalana) – The chariot of Devi Subhadra, built with 14 wheels and rising to nearly 21 cubits.

As the massive chariots move through the streets, devotees pull them with thick ropes while chanting hymns and the holy names of the Lord, creating an atmosphere of unparalleled spiritual fervour.

Lord Jagannath – The Lord of the Universe

Lord Jagannath, revered as “The Lord of the Universe,” is worshipped in a distinctive wooden form along with His elder brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra. A remarkable feature of this tradition is that the three monumental chariots are constructed afresh every year using specially selected sacred wood, following precise scriptural guidelines and traditional craftsmanship.

The wooden idols themselves are also unique. Unlike most Hindu temples where stone or metal idols are worshipped, the deities of Jagannath are carved from sacred neem wood. Through the sacred ritual of Nabakalebara, the idols are ceremonially replaced with newly carved ones at intervals of approximately 12 to 19 years, depending on the lunar calendar.

During Rath Yatra, the deities undertake a nine-day stay at the Gundicha Temple, symbolising their annual visit to their birthplace and a divine summer retreat. After this period of celebration and public worship, they return in a grand procession known as Bahuda Yatra, concluding one of the world’s largest and most revered religious festivals.
