Cuttack , a city with a rich historical past often referred to as the ‘Cultural’ Capital of Odisha . The city is one of India’s most ancient cities that dates back to 989 AD. Formerly the capital of ‘Odisha’, Cuttack also known as Abhinaba Baranasi Kataka in the medieval age, was established by the Keshari Dynasty (King Nrupa) as a military cantonment or a Kataka. Being established at the convergence of the Mahanadi and Kathjuri Rivers, trade soon flourished thus converting Cuttack into a prosperous city and a bustling trading area.A city which carries a rich cultural past, from the Keshari rulers to other dynasties that ruled Cuttack, each left behind a unique memory of themselves in the form of the many monuments such as the Stone Revetment on the banks of Kathjuri River, Barabati Fort, Quadam-i-Rasool, Jama Masjid ,Cuttack Chandi Temple, etc.
Jama Masjid is one of the oldest holy place for musilims in this silver city.Jama means big and the mosque is the biggest masjid of Cuttack. It was built during the Mughal era. Earlier there used to be a Madrasa in this mosque. However, since last 10 years, the Madrasa is shifted out.The neighbourhoods surrounding the Juma Masjid are inhabited both by Hindus and Muslims.The city which is known for brotherhood , celebrates Eid as big as they celebrate Durga Puja . The city has witnessed the brotherhood or bhaichara among the people of different religions . So when you get luck to visit the beautiful city never forget to visit the holy mosque .
