Remembering Legendary Jatra Actor Mahendra Das Aka Viku Seth
Legendary Odia Jatra star Mahendra Das aka Viku Seth, who passed away at the age of 55. He will always be remembered by every Odia for his memorable dialogues and performance in the play ‘Saguna Basichi Dena Melai’ and many others.
Mahendra Das was an acclaimed Jatra artist. The audience loved his character in ‘Saguna Basichi Dena Melai’ so much that eventually he got the moniker of Viku Seth and became a household name in the state. He was not only famous among the Jatra audience but also by Odia film audience.
The actor passed away after suffering a heart attack today at his Choudwar residence in Cuttack. He was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital from Choudwar to Cuttack after complaining acute chest pain but died on the way.
Some of his popular dialogues from the Jatra or play ‘Saguna Basichi Dena Melai’ includes ‘Na Taa Tahele Mina’, ‘Bhe’, ‘Bhala Nachila’, ‘Bhala Ku Bhala Kahiba Kana Kharap’.
The Jatra superstar has worked in Janata Gananatya, Kalinga Gananatya, Parbati Gananatya, and Dhauli Gananatya. He also acted in a couple of Odia films, but he could never emulate the huge success he had achieved on stage in Jollywood.
Jatra artists and lovers across the state paid tribute to Mahendra following his untimely demise.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and several others have offered their condolences on the passing away of the great stage artist.
