Odisha Unveils Major Water Management Initiative to Address Mahanadi River Flow Issues

The Odisha government has announced a comprehensive water management project aimed at tackling upstream water flow concerns and ensuring fair distribution across the state. As part of this initiative, 16 dams and 15 barrages will be constructed along the Mahanadi River to enhance water security and sustainability.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi shared details of the plan during a session in the Odisha Assembly on Thursday. In response to a query from BJD MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain, he emphasized the challenges posed by reduced downstream water flow near the Hirakud Dam, attributing the issue to unregulated upstream water usage in Chhattisgarh.

To safeguard Odisha’s water interests, the state has taken the matter to the Mahanadi Water Dispute Tribunal, where legal proceedings are underway. The proposed infrastructure projects aim to improve water availability for irrigation and households while strengthening the state’s resilience against future water crises.

The Mahanadi River is one of the major rivers in eastern India, flowing through the states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. It is an important water source for irrigation, hydroelectric power, and drinking water for millions of people.
